A porcelain crown is fantastic for restoring a damaged tooth by simply covering its imperfections. With a porcelain bridge, on the other hand, we can restore a full smile if there are small missing teeth.

It’s an alternative to implants when, for various reasons, we can’t place them or we can place fewer than the number of missing teeth. You’ll say, it’s complicated. Which solution should I choose? What is a porcelain crown and how does it differ from a bridge?

u003Cstrongu003EA porcelain crownu003C/strongu003E is a prosthetic crown made of ceramic. It covers and reinforces an existing ONE tooth that is substandard functionally or aesthetically. A crown, some say porcelain crown, is placed over an existing ground tooth, for example, to cover up multiple carious cavity fillings or to strengthen and improve the appearance of a root canal treated tooth. So, the crown has to have something to put it on – very often it is a ground tooth. But not always! u003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003Eu003Cstrongu003EA porcelain crown can also be mounted on an implantu003C/strongu003E, in which case it is connected to it with a connector. Only in this situation do we apply it to the site of the missing tooth. It then simply replaces the crown of the lost tooth, just as an implant replaces its root. u003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003Eu003Cstrongu003EA prosthetic bridgeu003C/strongu003E, on the other hand, can replace a missing tooth without the use of an implant. For example, a three-point bridge is mounted on two pillars, which are adjacent teeth ground for crowns. A central crown is placed in place of the missing tooth, suspended between the pillars – this is the span of the bridge. We can also create longer bridges that fill up to 3 missing teeth, provided that there are stable teeth on both sides of the gap, which, after grinding, will act as pillars. We then have, in effect, a five-point bridge. u003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003Eu003Cstrongu003EBridges can also be mounted on implantsu003C/strongu003E when the deficiencies are more extensive, and for various reasons we can not place more implants (bone atrophy, economic solution). Implant-supported bridges can be both permanently cemented and mobile solutions like snap-on bridges. u003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003Eu003Cstrongu003EWhy shouldnu0027t you delay replacing missing teeth?u003C/strongu003Eu003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003EPeople who lost a permanent tooth in childhood, such as a sixth, often no longer have enough space in adulthood to place an implant and restore the tooth with a porcelain crown over the implant. We then put in braces first to spread the teeth. This is one evidence that teeth “wander” in the mouth. They move toward the gap, and worse, they also tilt. They then often lose their stability, and periodontopathies, bone and gingival atrophy also appear. Tilted teeth further wear down the bite. And those over missing teeth begin to slide out of the alveolus uncontrollably. Patients describe this as the teeth getting longer or having grown in). Since missing teeth and the resulting tooth migration change the bite, the patient may additionally complain of migraines, as well as temporomandibular joint pain. Precious metals are completely inert to the body and do not cause allergies. As with crowns on base metals, a substructure is first created, only that it is made of gold. It is then covered with ceramics. Due to the warm shade of bullion, crowns behind gold can be more aesthetically pleasing. u003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003EHowever, the most beautiful are always u003Cstrongu003Eall-ceramic crowns and bridgesu003C/strongu003E, in which both the foundation and the facing part are made of porcelain or zirconium oxide, and this is not just the opinion of the Stomo Clinic team.u003Cbru003EWhy are these the most beautiful prosthetic works?u003Cbru003EItu0027s simple. Imagine a metal thimble that needs to be covered with a thin layer of porcelain, or glass. Such glass must be strongly opaque, because how to cover the color of metal with a few millimeters. What will be the effect? Very good, but imperfect. Because, after all, the natural teeth inside under the layer of enamel are milky white, and not in metal. And it is this natural tooth structure that all-ceramic crowns mimic perfectly. Our thimble, or substructure under the crown, is made of zirconium oxide or porcelain. Both of these materials have the color of natural dentition. As a result, the veneer layer of such crowns doesnu0027t have to mask anything; it can be vitreous, semi-transparent like the natural enamel on the teeth. How are porcelain crowns and bridges made? 2 visits are enough!

Porcelain crowns and bridges require a minimum of ONLY two visits to STOMO Clinic in Wroclaw. At the first meeting, our team is able to perform a full diagnostics, plan all the activities, and prepare the teeth for the prosthetic restoration. On the second visit, all that remains is the installation and the joy of the achieved smile metamorphosis. u003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003Eu003Cstrongu003EFirst visit. Always diagnostic u003C/strongu003Eu003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003EBefore we begin preparing teeth for a crown or bridge, we always check the health of the entire mouth. We analyze bite conditions, smile aesthetics, and present the patient with an optimal treatment plan. X-rays performed at STOMO Clinic are a diagnostic element. With their help, we check whether the teeth will need root canal treatment from our endodontist before coring. Teeth undergoing root canal treatment are strengthened with crown and root inlays, and only then do we install crowns on them. For the convenience and well-being of the patient, before the final prosthetic work is created, we place temporary crowns on the prepared teeth. Then we cement the prosthetic work. For complex bridges that restore larger missing teeth, we also always offer patients an intermediate stage, a fitting of the framework itself. The ceramist then veneers it, and we cement the final work on the third visit.

What is the durability of porcelain crowns and bridges?

The durability of well-made porcelain crowns and bridges is many years. If they are well designed, fit in the bite, and their pillars are healthy and stable, they do not create the need to replace them. If, on the other hand, they are ill-fitting and have lost their tightness for some reason, they should be replaced as soon as possible. This is because they pose a risk to oral health. First of all, food can get under leaking prosthetic crowns, bacteria will grow there, and inflammation will result. Through a leaking crown, you can even lose a tooth, which is the pillar of the prosthetic work. u003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003EMismatched prosthetic restorations, worn for many years, can also irritate soft tissues, rubbing and causing gingivitis, soft tissue lesions. This is a risk of developing cancer. Another risk, excessive strain on certain tooth groups. Thatu0027s why we encourage you to get prosthetic work done in reputable places, that is, places that donu0027t just focus on the aesthetics of a single prosthetic work. For us at STOMO Clinic, it is equally important that the crown and bridge fit perfectly in the bite, are tight and stable for years, and are fitted to healthy and properly prepared dentition.

Does it hurt to prepare a tooth for a porcelain crown?

At STOMO Clinic, there is no room for pain in the dental chair. Even though we grind your teeth for crowns, you donu0027t feel a thing. We anesthetize living teeth for the procedure, while teeth after root canal treatment donu0027t require it because they are dead. We then place temporary work to protect the ground teeth from sensitivity.

How long will I have to wait for a new crown?

A few days. In fact, two visits to the dental clinic are enough to have a porcelain bridge or crown. To save time, on the first visit we do all the preparatory and diagnostic work. On the second, we cement the finished crowns and bridges. For advanced work, we can schedule a fitting of the substructure, even before the outer ceramic layer is placed. Then the time for completing the work extends to several days.

Will I have a bristling smile before I receive my prosthetic work?

While waiting for the installation of porcelain crowns or bridges, you look and feel great. And thatu0027s because after grinding the teeth, we immediately install temporary acrylic crowns or bridges. This way, firstly, the prepared teeth are protected – living tissue after grinding can be hypersensitive. Secondly, with temporary crowns, no one notices that you are undergoing a dental makeover.

How to take care of crowns and bridges?

The same goes for your own teeth. Brush them twice a day with toothpaste, and clean the spaces between the teeth with floss or interdental brushes. We always recommend the use of irrigators, which clean the space between the teeth with a stream of water under pressure. For bridges, itu0027s a good idea to get special flosses or toothpicks to clean the space under the bridge span, or to rinse it thoroughly with an irrigator. Since prosthetic works are made subgingivally, that is, in such a way that they remain tight at their base, one should not worry that daily hygiene will damage them. Instead, it is the patientu0027s responsibility to come in for an inspection of the prosthetic restorations twice a year. At our clinic, this can be combined with a dental check-up.

Can I replace a prosthetic bridge with an implant?

Of course. If you have a three-point prosthetic bridge, you can simply replace it with an implant, which will be placed in place of the missing tooth. After osteointegration, we will install a porcelain crown on it. What about the two teeth that were ground down for the bridge pillars? We will cover them and precisely rebuild them – also with porcelain crowns. Your old prosthetic bridge will come in handy, as you will continue to wear it through the osteointegration period of the implant. A titanium screw implanted into the bone at the site of the defect will integrate securely without additional stress.

What are the contraindications to placing a prosthetic crown or bridge?

We cannot immediately perform prosthetic treatment if the patient has untreated teeth. First we treat and fill carious cavities, if necessary – we perform root canal treatment. After endodontics, we strengthen the tooth with a root-canal post. u003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003EContraindications to crowns or bridges are periodontal disease, which we also need to treat first. If the teeth are worn down and damaged due to malocclusion, we first raise the height of the stenosis with orthodontics or prosthetics on the molars. If the patient is planning implant treatment, we first focus on implant placement and installation of temporary work. u003Cbru003Eu003Cbru003EWe install the final crowns and bridges on implants at STOMO Clinic in Wroclaw when the titanium implants have formed a biological connection with the bone, i.e. the osteointegration stage has been completed.
