Paediatric orthodontist at Stomo Clinic in Wrocław When is the first time to go to a paediatric orthodontist with our child? This question is asked by parents who do not want to miss problems in the development of their children. And that’s good, because the principle “prevention is better than cure” also applies to the treatment of malocclusion in the youngest. Modifying this proverb, it can be said that it is better to start treating malocclusion in a child as soon as the first problems appear. When the defect grows and deepens, it will require longer therapy with orthodontic braces, and sometimes even orthognathic surgery.
Stomo Clinic specializes in pediatric orthodontics in Wrocław, m.in. Our experience shows that early orthodontic treatment with fixed braces is in many cases a way to avoid surgical procedures and long-term treatment of malocclusion. How do we treat children orthodontically?
Damon system and D-Gainer early malocclusion treatment technique in pediatric orthodontics in Wroclaw
In early orthodontic treatment, Dr. Anna Duda uses fixed Damon braces in children using the D-Gainer technique. It allows you to exclude milk teeth from therapy and puts permanent teeth in the correct positions, even at the stage of their eruption. The Damon System is famous for its ligature-free orthodontics for adolescents and adults. Orthodontic visits take place on average every 8 weeks, so they are less frequent than in older types of therapies with classic braces.
What do fixed braces for early orthodontics look like?
You can easily recognize the Damon camera with the D-Gainer technique, because it has characteristic springs. They serve the proper expansion of the dental arch, and specifically help to make room for permanent teeth that will appear in the mouth in the near future.
Contrary to appearances, fixed braces are comfortable for the child. It consists only of brackets and orthodontic wires, which in some places replace springs. The apparatus is easy to clean with water-picks, or water flossers. Of course, it can be made in an aesthetic version, then the locks are transparent, with a color similar to white.
How long does a child wear braces?
It depends on whether we intervene at the right time. Our record holders who visited a children’s orthodontist at Stomo Clinic in Wrocław wore braces for only 2-3 months. It is worth adding that the therapy time is also comfortable for parents. Why? Because you don’t have to persuade your child to wear braces, as in the case of removable braces, which children often simply don’t want to wear. Then parents must remind, watch and control whether the child wears removable braces for the appropriate number of hours a day.
Paediatric orthodontist in Wrocław. When to go for the first consultation?
We convince parents that in some cases, early orthodontics will give their children great benefits. Rapid therapy very often eliminates the need for treatment in the future. Therefore, we recommend that, as recommended by the American Orthodontist Association, children should come for orthodontic consultations no later than 7 years of age. Then we can catch the defect early enough and nip it in the bud quickly.
What situations require early treatment recommended by a paediatric orthodontist?
Situations that should worry parents are primarily :
- Visible lack of space for permanent teeth
- A surviving milk tooth, even though we can already see the tooth
which should come out in its place
With the help of early orthodontics , we quickly correct dental defects, including removing the deficit (lack) of space for permanent teeth.
We also visit a paediatric orthodontist when the teeth are crowded, i.e. compressed, or – on the contrary – very rarely spaced intermittently. Parents should also notice excessively protruding incisors. Other types of defects are rather difficult to diagnose by a parent, so orthodontic control is recommended for all children around 6-7 years of age. Few parents will recognize whether their child is developing an overbite, crossbite, open bite, etc.
However, there are still behaviors that parents certainly see in their children, often quite early. These are various parafunctions, such as: thumb sucking, biting pencils, breathing through the mouth, speech defects resulting from, for example, tongue pressing, persistent childhood type of swallowing, too long use of a pacifier. Then we will use orthodontic treatment even at the preschool stage. And again, it will be a quick and very effective treatment.
