Maxillary sinus lift – open method

Advanced bone reconstruction procedure before implantation in the posterior section of the jaw

Open sinus lift is a more extensive surgical procedure that allows for a significant increase in the number of bones in the back of the jaw – even by a few millimetres. It is performed when the bone loss is too great to use the closed method.

Description

This procedure is often necessary before dental implants are placed in patients with large bone atrophy in the area of the molars and premolars of the upper jaw.

How does the procedure work?

  • The procedure is performed under local anesthesia or sedation.

  • The dental surgeon cuts the gum and exposes the wall of the maxillary sinus.

  • A small bone window forms in the lateral wall of the sinus.

  • The sinus mucosa is gently separated and lifted, and the space is filled with bone substitute material.

  • Sometimes implants are placed during the same procedure, but most often it is required to wait a few months for the transplanted bone to integrate.

When is the open method used?

  • When the vertical bone deficit exceeds 4 mm

  • In the case of significant alveolar atrophy

  • In patients with long-term missing teeth in the upper jaw

  • When several implants are planned to be placed in the posterior segment

Advantages of the treatment:

  • Enables the reconstruction of even very large bone deficiencies

  • Increases the chances of implantation success

  • Lasting and predictable effect

At Stomo Clinic, the open sinus floor lift procedure is performed based on 3D diagnostics (CBCT) and individual surgical guides, which guarantees maximum precision and safety. So you can be sure that even in difficult conditions you will get a stable base for implants.
